SEL and Student Aggression Dont Wait Until Its Too Late

Presented by:  Doug Maraffa, M.S. and Adam Bauserman, Ed.D.

During times of student crisis, we are limited to a few interventions. Conversely, there are a host of strategies we can use to prevent and reduce the impact student aggression has on the learning environment. This session will highlight a preventative cycle for student aggression using systematic and evidence-based strategies based on the foundation of Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Session objectives will show how teachers can become more socially aware of students emotions and behavior in order to recognize the warning signs and triggers of possible student aggression; how to proactively plan interventions and used them with consistency and fidelity; how to progress monitor in order to evaluate aggression plan effectiveness; and how to self-manage emotions in order to respond effectively to student’s aggressive behavior.

Teaching the Top 10 SEL Skills to All Students

Presenter:  Stephen N Elliott, PhD

Research with teachers and parents has established that they highly value 10 social emotional learning skills in their children. Among these 10 SEL skills are listen to others, follows rules, asks for help, get along with others, and stay calm with others. These skills and five others are directly taught in the SSIS SEL Classwide Intervention Program (CIP) using a 6-step evidence-based intervention approach that is S.A.F.E.R and requires less than 1.5% of the school year. All intervention materials are web-based and highly engaging for interventionists (i.e., teachers, counselors, psychologist, and social workers). The SSIS SEL CIP has been identified as a SELect Program by CASEL.

Teaching SEL Skills that Promote Resilience in Children

Presenter:  Stephen N Elliott, PhD

Student resiliency is a characteristic necessary for the development of a healthy, adaptable outlook. This attribute enables children to emerge from challenging experiences with a positive sense of themselves and their futures. This session focuses on providing educators strategies and practices needed to assess and support the development of specific social emotional learning (SEL) skills that promote resiliency in children and youth. The featured SEL skills in this session are asking for help, getting along with others, expressing feelings, being positive about the future, and saying when there is a problem. The steps and resources from the SSIS SEL Classwide Intervention Program (CIP) needed for teaching and evaluating these skills will be illustrated.
