The Intersection of Dyslexia, Reading Disorders, and Language Disorders

Presenters: Maggie Kjer, Ph.D. and Anise Flowers, Ph.D.

The development of oral language skills and reading skills are highly intertwined. For many years, the process by which the brain learns to decode words has remained mysterious. With the advent of brain imaging technology and decades of research on reading, we know that both phonological processing and orthographic processing are essential for successful decoding. An understanding of phonemic awareness and how to evaluate advanced phonemic proficiency is critical for promoting the development of word level decoding skills. This session will highlight the research describing how word-level reading develops and what interventions can enhance decoding skills.
