Fairness & Equity in SEL Assessment and Intervention Practices

The Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning recently expanded its definition of SEL explicitly to emphasize educational equity and noted that SEL assessment and intervention programs can empower students and educators to “co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities” (CASEL, 2020). This belief effectively characterizes the design imperatives that guide the use of the SSIS SEL assessments and Classwide Intervention Program (CIP). Specifically, the SSIS SEL program measures and teaches 15 specific SEL skills and their application to social situations at school and in the community. These skill units cut across all SEL competency areas – Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making Skills – that when developed with all students can advance equity through attitudes and actions among a community of adult and student learners. A close look at the fairness data behind the SSIS SEL assessments and several of the equity-informed CIP skill units will be featured to highlight applications that will help educators achieve more educational equity for all students.
