This 3-hour session examines the current mental health crisis facing our students and discusses how a broadband assessment of behavior can be used to evaluate the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. Specifically, the session explores how components of the BASC–3 can be used to identify mental health issues and how results from these assessments can be used in the interpretation process and to guide BASC–3 interventions and supports. Participants have access to this session for one year.

Audience: This combo session is targeted to professionals who are seeking a dual approach to addressing mental health and well-being needs for students.

Course description: This 6-hour learning track is designed to support BASC-3 users in optimizing their use of the tool to support students' mental health needs. The session includes two separate modules. Module One: Identifying and Supporting Students’ Mental Health Needs and Module Two: Promoting Social, Emotional and Behavioral Well-Being Development.

Learning objectives: As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

Part 1: Identifying and Supporting Students’ Mental Health Needs

  1. Discuss the current mental health challenges facing our students.
  2. Identify how behavioral and mental health assessments can be used to address these challenges.

Part 2: BASC–3 Rating Scales, Self-Report of Personality, and Emotional Disturbance Qualification Scales

  1. Apply the BASC–3 model, employing the rating scales and self-report.
  2. Use the BASC–3 model in the process of identifying social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

Part 3: Scores, Reports, Interpretation, and Guiding Interventions

  1. Demonstrate how results and reports can be interpreted and used diagnostically.
  2. Formulate how students’ results can be used in the selection and application of BASC–3 interventions and supports.

Promoting Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Well-Being Development

Part 1

  1. Determine how supporting social, emotional, and behavioral development can promote student well-being
  2. Learn how behavioral assessments can be used in this process

Part 2

  1. Understand the BASC–3 model, the Parent and Teacher Rating Scales, and the Self-Report of Personality
  2. Apply these to the process of identifying social, emotional, and behavioral strengths

Part 3

  1. Demonstrate how results and reports can be interpreted and used to build a strength-based profile for students
  2. Implement BASC–3 social, emotional, and behavioral instruction and supports in the process of proactively developing well-being and a strength-based response to interventions for mental health and behavioral challenges
